Production Years and Model Code

The second generation Mazda BT-50 (model code TL) was produced from 2011 to 2020. The pickup truck was introduced in 2011 as a replacement for the first generation (UN) and underwent a facelift in 2015 that affected the exterior and technical specifications. Production took place at plants in Thailand (AutoAlliance Thailand) and South Africa, as well as in other countries for local markets.

Body Types and Modifications
The Mazda BT-50 MK2 was offered in two main body variants:

  • Single Cab - work version with a two-seater cabin and long cargo bed.

  • Double Cab - five-seater version with a shortened body, aimed at family and commercial use.

The cargo bed measured from 1.5 to 2.3 meters depending on modification. The gross vehicle weight reached 3-3.5 tons, with a payload capacity of 1-1.2 tons.

Technical Specifications and Engines
Under the hood, the BT-50 MK2 featured Ford-developed diesel engines (due to the Mazda-Ford partnership at the time):

  • 2.2L Duratorq TDCI (150 HP, 375 Nm) - base version for commercial modifications.

  • 3.2L Duratorq TDCI (200 HP, 470 Nm) - top engine for heavy-duty and off-road versions.

Transmission options included a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic (after facelift). Drivetrain options were rear-wheel drive (RWD) or four-wheel drive (4WD) with low-range gearing.

Design and Features
The BT-50 MK2's exterior was developed jointly with Ford, making the pickup resemble the Ford Ranger T6 (2011-2020). However, Mazda added its own elements: a signature-style radiator grille, different headlights, and trim details.

After the 2015 facelift, the bumpers, lighting, and interior were updated. The cabin received a new multimedia screen, improved materials, and additional safety options (rearview cameras, parking sensors).

Interesting Facts

  • Shared platforms with Ford - The BT-50 MK2 and Ford Ranger T6 were developed on the same platform, but Mazda focused on comfort while Ford emphasized off-road capabilities.

  • No gasoline versions - Unlike some competitors, the second-gen Mazda BT-50 was only offered with diesel engines.

  • SP sport version - Australia and South Africa received a BT-50 SP variant with upgraded suspension, sporty body kit, and interior.

  • Partnership change - After ending cooperation with Ford, Mazda introduced the third-gen BT-50 in 2020 based on the Isuzu D-Max platform.

Conclusion
The Mazda BT-50 MK2 was a reliable and practical pickup that combined commercial functionality with comfort elements. Despite sharing roots with the Ford Ranger, the model maintained Japanese quality standards. In 2020, the second generation was succeeded by a new version developed in partnership with Isuzu.
