The second generation Audi Q7 is the flagship SUV of the German brand, combining spaciousness, premium comfort and cutting-edge technology. This model replaced the first Q7, which remained in production for nearly ten years. The second generation received a more modern design, improved platform and numerous innovative solutions.

Internal Designation and Production Years

Internally at Audi, this model is designated as Typ 4M (body code). Production of the second generation began in 2015, with the official debut at the Detroit Auto Show. The first customers received their Q7 IIs by the end of that same year. In 2019, the vehicle underwent a facelift bringing updated styling, new engine technologies and an enhanced multimedia system.

Body Type and Platform

The Q7 II is built on the modular MLB Evo platform shared with the Porsche Cayenne and Volkswagen Touareg. This made the vehicle lighter than the first generation (weight reduced by nearly 300 kg) while improving dynamics. The body is a classic five-door SUV with seven-seat configuration (optional).

Design and Interior

The Q7 II's exterior became more angular than its predecessor's rounded shapes. The Singleframe grille widened, headlights sharpened, and body lines grew more pronounced. The 2019 facelift added new LED headlights, revised bumpers and subtle rear tweaks.

The Q7 II's cabin epitomizes premium quality: fine materials (leather, aluminum, wood), multi-adjust comfort seats and the digital Virtual Cockpit. The MMI system dominates with its large screen (later versions had dual displays). The third row suits children best, but space suffices for long journeys.

Technical Features

The Q7 II offered multiple engine options:

Petrol:

  • 3.0 TFSI (333 HP) - main market option

  • 2.0 TFSI (252 HP) - rare efficiency choice

  • Post-facelift: Q7 TFSI e hybrid (462 HP)

Diesel:

  • 3.0 TDI (218-286 HP) - Europe's favorite

  • Potent V8 TDI (435 HP) in SQ7

Transmission was an 8-speed Tiptronic with quattro AWD and self-locking differential.

Interesting Facts

  • First electrified Q7 - post-facelift PHEV with 40km EV range

  • SQ7 with electric turbo - V8 diesel's EPC system eliminated lag

  • Premium audio - optional 23-speaker Bang & Olufsen 3D system

  • Autonomous driving - early adopter of Traffic Jam Assist

Conclusion

The second-gen Audi Q7 successfully blends luxury, technology and practicality. It retained flagship status while gaining dynamism and efficiency. The 2019 refresh kept it contemporary, with hybrids ensuring electro-relevance. For those seeking a large, comfortable and tech-laden SUV, the Q7 II remains an outstanding choice.
