Internal designation and production years
Audi A3 8Y is the factory index of the fourth generation of the popular compact hatchback that replaced the 8V model in 2020. Production started in March 2020, with first deliveries in Europe beginning in summer of the same year. A facelift isn't expected before 2024-2025 as Audi traditionally updates design and technology 4-5 years after debut.

Body types and modifications
The fourth generation A3 is offered in several body variants, maintaining the brand's traditional flexibility:

Hatchback (Sportback) - five-door version, most popular in Europe. Body length is 4340 mm, 3 cm longer than predecessor.
Sedan (Limousine) - introduced in 2020, features elegant profile and increased trunk space (425 liters vs 380 in hatchback).
RS 3 - high-performance version with 2.5-liter turbo engine (400 hp), debuted in 2021. Available only in hatchback and sedan body styles.
There are also hybrid modifications (e-tron) with plug-in powertrain, but their sales share is small.

Model description: design and technology
A3 8Y received more aggressive design following Audi's larger models - narrow LED headlights with "shark" cuts, massive grille and pronounced body lines. Inside - digital Virtual Cockpit (12.3 inches) and touchscreen infotainment (10.1 inches) angled toward driver.

MQB Evo platform shared with Volkswagen Golf 8 brought improved sound insulation and adaptive suspension (option). Base engines - 1.0 TSI (110 hp) and 1.5 TSI (150 hp) with cylinder deactivation. For performance - 2.0 TFSI (190-245 hp) and aforementioned RS 3.

Interesting facts

Broken tradition - First time in A3 history the 3-door hatchback was discontinued due to low demand. 8Y generation is five-door only.
Humorous voice assistant - Voice recognition understands even phrases like "I'm bored", offering entertainment options.
RS 3 sporting roots - 2.5-liter engine inherits from legendary 1980s Audi Sport Quattro with modern turbocharging.
Eco-friendly start - Some regions offered A3 8Y with CNG engine (g-tron), discontinued by 2023 due to low demand.

Criticism and comparisons
Despite progress, A3 8Y is often compared to BMW 1 Series and Mercedes A-Class. Audi focused on technology but some note competitors have softer suspension and Mercedes more luxurious interiors. However Audi wins in material quality and assembly precision.

Conclusion
A3 8Y is typical Audi at its best: restrained, technological and reliable. It doesn't try to revolutionize but offers balanced premium compact qualities. Facelift will likely add more electric models, but even now it's one of the strongest in its class.
