The second generation Volvo C70, produced from 2006 to 2013, embodies Swedish elegance and engineering excellence. This model stands out not only for its refined design but also for its reliability and unique feature: a convertible with a folding hardtop.

Body Type: Two-in-One

The main characteristic of the second-gen C70 is its coupe-convertible body. Unlike the first generation which offered separate coupe and soft-top convertible versions, Volvo combined both variants into one model here. The roof folds in 30 seconds, transforming the car from an elegant coupe to a sporty convertible. The hardtop also provides better noise insulation and protection than a traditional fabric roof.

Bumper Material (may vary):

Polypropylene plus ethylene-propylene-diene terpolymer with 20% mineral filler. Marking: PP+EPDM-TD20

Design and Interior: Scandinavian Aesthetics

The C70's second-gen styling was developed with Italian design house Pininfarina, giving it elegant curves and a sporty profile. The signature Volvo grille, well-defined headlights, and harmonious shapes made the car instantly recognizable.

The interior followed typical Volvo minimalism - refined and comfortable with premium materials, ergonomic seats, and excellent sound insulation. Highlights included the available multimedia system with display and Dynaudio premium sound.

Technical Specifications

The C70 was available with these gasoline engines:

  • 2.4i (170 hp) - base naturally aspirated

  • 2.5 T5 (230 hp) - turbocharged for lively performance

  • 2.4 T (180 hp) - mid-range turbo option

Transmissions included 5-/6-speed manual or 5-speed Geartronic automatic. Front-wheel drive only slightly limited sportiness but ensured excellent driving comfort.

Safety First

Like all Volvos, the C70 pioneered safety features even as a convertible, including:

  • Reinforced body structure

  • POP (Progressive Outer Protection) rollover system

  • Seat-integrated airbags

  • Folding roof that didn't consume all trunk space

Interesting Facts

  • Volvo's last convertible: The C70 was the brand's final open-top model before focusing on SUVs and EVs

  • Used market rarity: As a niche vehicle, well-maintained examples are hard to find today

  • Screen appearances: The C70 featured in several films and TV shows, often as a successful character's car

Verdict

The Volvo C70 II blends Scandinavian design, innovation and comfort in a convertible package. It's not an overly sporty or luxurious car, but has unique character - perfect for those who appreciate understated elegance. A well-kept example makes a wonderful summer companion with Swedish charm.
