Model Name and Generations

The third-generation Volkswagen Touareg (Mk3) debuted in 2018. This premium SUV retained its name despite the rebranding of other VW models (e.g., the shift from "Passat" to "ID." in the electric lineup). The Touareg remains the brand's flagship in the SUV segment.

Production Years and Facelift

Production of the Touareg Mk3 began in 2018, with the first deliveries to Europe starting the same year. In 2023, Volkswagen introduced a facelift for the model, which included updated lighting, minor exterior changes, and new technological features. However, the platform (MLB Evo) and main structural elements remained unchanged.

Model Code and Platform

The Touareg Mk3 carries the factory designation CR (previously, Mk1 was 7L, Mk2 was 7P). The car is built on the modular MLB Evo platform, which it shares with the Audi Q7, Porsche Cayenne, Bentley Bentayga, and Lamborghini Urus. This ensures a high level of technological sophistication and adaptability for different modifications.

Body Type and Modifications

The Touareg Mk3 is offered exclusively as a 5-door SUV with permanent all-wheel drive (4Motion). Key modifications include:

  • Gasoline engines: 3.0 TSI (340 hp), though less common, as the focus is on diesel and hybrid models.
  • Diesel engines: 3.0 TDI in various power outputs (231, 286, and 340 hp), including a version with an electric compressor to reduce turbo lag.
  • Hybrid versions: eHybrid (plug-in hybrid with 381 hp) and the high-performance Touareg R with a 462 hp system.
  • Special editions: Black Edition (enhanced styling), Elegance, and R-Line (sport package).

How to Remove the Front Bumper

Note: For the facelifted model (2023 onwards), the upper part of the bumper is secured with clips instead of screws, so the radiator grille does not need to be removed.

  1. Open the hood.
  2. Remove the seal above the headlights and radiator grille.
  3. Unscrew the four screws (fastened top to bottom) securing the radiator grille.
  4. Release the clips and remove the radiator grille (the grille is held by nine clips at the bottom and four on the sides—removal is difficult. Use a thin, long screwdriver for the side clips and a thin plastic tool, like a credit card, for the lower clips. Do not pull gently; use a moderate, sharp tug).
  5. Behind the grille, unscrew the six screws securing the upper part of the front bumper.
  6. From underneath, unscrew the nine screws securing the lower part and wheel arch extensions.
  7. Turn the wheels inward.
  8. Release the wheel arch extensions from the bumper (held by clips; pull from bottom to top. To avoid breaking the clips, especially in the fender, fold back the fender liner and squeeze them with your fingers).
  9. Unscrew the screws securing the front part of the fender liners.
  10. Unscrew the screws securing the corners to the guide rails in the fenders.
  11. Release the clips in the fenders (pull the corners outward).
  12. (Facelift 2023 onwards) Sharply release the clips behind the radiator grille.
  13. With an assistant, remove the front bumper by pulling it forward (ensure wires and hoses are not torn).
  14. Disconnect the electronic component connectors.
  15. Disconnect the headlight washer hoses (note: fluid will drain from the reservoir).
