BMW 4 Series G22/G23/G26 (2020+): How to Remove Bumpers

Production Years and Facelift:

• Start of production: June 2020 (for model year 2021).
• Facelift (LCI - Life Cycle Impulse): Introduced in late 2024 as a 2025 model.

Body Types (for Europe):

• G22: 2-door coupe.
• G23: 2-door convertible (with a soft folding top).
• G26: 4-door Gran Coupé (liftback, introduced in 2021). Important: Unlike the previous generation, the Gran Coupé is built on a separate, unique platform.

Technical Specifications (Key Engines for EU):

The G2X generation is based on the modular CLAR platform, which it shares with the 3 Series (G20). All versions are equipped with an 8-speed ZF automatic transmission and rear-wheel or all-wheel drive (xDrive).

• 420i / 420d: 2.0-liter turbocharged gasoline (184 hp) and diesel (190 hp) engines. Basic but efficient.
• 430i: 2.0-liter turbocharged gasoline engine (245 hp). Optimal balance of dynamics and fuel consumption.
• M440i xDrive: Top "non-M" version. 3.0-liter inline-six turbocharged engine (374 hp) with Mild-Hybrid technology (48V). 0-100 km/h acceleration in ~4.5 seconds.

How to Remove the Front Bumper

1. Open the hood.
2. Remove the hood seal.
3. Remove six clips, release from retainers, and remove the plastic cover.
4. Under the cover, unscrew the eight screws that are installed from top to bottom and secure the top part of the front bumper.
5. Move to the lower part and unscrew the ten screws installed from bottom to top.
6. Perform the following on both the left and right sides:
   • Turn the wheel inward into the wheel arch.
   • Unscrew the four screws securing the wheel arch liner to the bumper.
   • Pull the wheel arch liner aside and from the inside, unscrew the two screws installed from bottom to upward, securing the bumper to the bracket in the fender.
7. With an assistant, release the retainers in the fenders and remove the bumper by pulling it forward.
8. Disconnect the electrical connectors.

How to Remove the Rear Bumper

1. Open the trunk lid.
2. Near the rear lights, remove the plastic covers by pulling them towards you and upward.
3. Under the covers, unscrew the two screws securing the top part of the rear bumper.
4. Now for the lower part. On the left and right, unscrew six screws, and release the middle part from the clips (using a thin flat-head screwdriver, pull towards yourself).
5. In the wheel arches, unscrew the four screws securing the rear part of the wheel arch liners.
6. Behind the wheel arch liners, unscrew the two screws installed from bottom to upward, securing the bumper corners to the brackets in the fenders.
7. With moderate force, pull the bumper corners towards yourself to release the clips in the fenders.
8. Pull towards yourself to release the clips under the rear lights.
9. Remove the bumper by pulling it backward and disconnect the parking sensor connectors.

• Technology: One of the first BMWs with an off-road assist system (for all-wheel drive) and an Augmented Reality (AR) head-up display.
